Antique jajim from the village of Mut which lies in the province of Mersin in the southern central region of Turkey along the Mediterranean coast. This brilliantly built of colour story of this rug is constructed using the traditional flat weave loom technique of cotton on wool which has been dyed using only natural flora and fauna and matter of the local habitat of the Turkmen tribes in this area. The striking geometric pattern is peppered throughout with motifs symbolic of protection against the evils of other humans and supernatural powers aimed at the one in possession of the rug. The weaver of this piece has incorporated the symbols of the cross, hook, amulet and stylized burdock plant with this intention. A border of flowing water essential to life appears at either end. In these tribal societies, women wove kilims at different stages of their lives, choosing themes appropriate to their own circumstances.
Colour palette: robin's egg blue, faded indigo blue, ivory white, saffron red, pumpkin orange, oxblood, black, lavender, chartreuse and mustard gold
This pre-loved, antique rug has superficial wear throughout consistent with age. There are some stray yarns along lengths. Please note what appears to be a black circular stain left side adjacent to central diamond is actually an area where something hot must have been placed on the rug and seared the fibers, leaving it flat and exposing the black wool underneath.
As with all of our collection, this historical rug fits beautifully in various aesthetic settings. Whether it be ethnic bohemian, period traditionalist or juxtaposed against a minimalist modern backdrop.
