Antique 1920's Afyon tribal jajim rig. Afyonkarahisar, simply referred to as Afyon is a city in Turkey in the mountainous countryside inland from the Aegean coast, over a hundred miles south-west of the capital Ankara, along the Akarcay river. This particular piece has an all over staggered diamond pattern with the goz or eye motif repetitiously woven within. It carries with it the belief held in ancient Anatolian culture that it can ward off the evil glances of others and when woven into a textile, it then itself becomes an object of spiritual protection. This rug has a wonderfully unique colour story, made so by the natural elements of the sun, wind and rain throughout its century long lifetime. This natural effect has rendered the rug with a soft feel along with a variegated palette punctuated by deeper, more saturated hues creating a striking visual depth and genuine patina.
Colour palette: natural ecru, ivory, dark chocolate brown, indigo blue faded to baby blue, indigo blue, pumpkin orange, clementine orange and faded saffron red.
This pre-loved, antique rug has fading and imperfections from natural element exposure and a long life of use.
As with all of our collection, this historical rug fits beautifully in various aesthetic settings. Whether it be ethnic bohemian, period traditionalist or juxtaposed against a minimalist modern backdrop.
